North Korea: Tracing Family Through Food

Created by Chef de Cuisine Jennifer Kim, this menu is a reflection of identity, memory, and the enduring power of food to connect what time and history have separated. Inspired by their family’s story of displacement during the Korean War, Jennifer’s cooking traces the path of their grandmother’s flight from North to South Korea, a journey marked by loss, resilience, and love that spans generations.

Through research, storytelling, and the act of cooking, Chef Kim seeks to rebuild the missing links in their family’s history to bridge the silence between what was left behind and what remains. Each dish becomes part of that unifying journey, honoring bonds forged by blood and rekindled through recipes shared by word of mouth.

This menu is both remembrance and reunion,  a celebration of how food can carry us home, to one another, and to the stories that shape who we are.
